Newton Davis, modeste employé dans un cabinet d'architectes de Boston, a fait construire une ravissante villa au bord d'un lac situé à proximité de sa ville natale de Dobbs Mill, afin de mettre toutes les chances de son côté au moment de demander la main de Backy, son amie d'enfance. Malheureusement, ce romantique projet se heurte à un refus poli, mais définitif, de la demoiselle. Trois mois plus tard, replié dans un amer célibat, Newton rencontre Gwen, serveuse au café « Budapest ». La jupe folklorique et le faux accent hongrois de la jeune femme ne sont pas ses seuls faux-semblants. Car Gwen est une fervente adepte de la fantaisie débridée, une mythomane, une virtuose du mensonge, bref une experte dans l'art de repeindre le réel aux couleurs de l'imaginaire. Sans hésiter, elle s'installe dans la villa de Dobbs Mill et se présente à la famille et au voisinage comme l'épouse de Newton...
