Helen Weeks est une inspectrice à la police de Manchester. Audacieuse, elle a pour habitude de ne jamais se laisser déstabiliser par l’adversité ou les remarques de son entourage. Divisée entre son partenaire obstiné, l’inspecteur Paul Hopkins, et sa liaison passionnelle avec un autre agent, Helen ne se sent pas du tout prête à devenir mère. Pour échapper à ses doutes, elle décide de venir en aide à sa meilleure amie d’enfance dont le mari est suspecté d’avoir kidnappé deux petites filles. Helen retourne donc dans son village natal afin de mener l’enquête. Mais ce retour aux sources va réveiller de vieux souvenirs liés à un crime du passé...
